Plano, TX Sedation Dentistry from Plano Smiles

Fear of the dentist prevents many patients from keeping important dental check-ups or seeking procedures that allow their smiles to look healthy and beautiful. At Plano Smiles, we are committed to excellent patient care and offer sedation dentistry to help our anxious patients feel good about going to the dentist.

Types of Uses for Sedation Dentistry

Dental sedation isn’t one-size-fits-all – there are several sedation methods that produce varying levels of relaxation and are ideal for different dental visits. In general, sedation promotes patient comfort and reduces the anxiety that some patients feel at the dental office. Our Plano sedation dentist offers both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation to help patients feel at-ease during treatment.

The oral-conscious sedation method uses medication to create a feeling of deep relaxation. Patients take the medication before visiting our dental office and can take another dose upon arrival, if necessary. Patients undergoing oral conscious sedation won’t remember details of their appointment – such as sounds or smells – and time appears to pass quickly. Oral conscious sedation is perfect for longer dental visits, as the medication may stay in your system for a few hours.

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. This sedative elevates mood and relaxes patients. Neither oral conscious sedation nor nitrous oxide put patients to sleep, but some are so relaxed after sedation that they may fall asleep as a result. The effects of nitrous can be reversed with the inhalation of pure oxygen – you won’t need a companion to drive you to and from your appointment.  Nitrous is typically used for shorter dental visits and can help fearful dental patients feel comfortable during routine care.

In addition to sedation, we use a local anesthetic to thoroughly numb the treatment site. This helps reduce any discomfort during and immediately following your procedure. While sedated, our patients will still be awake, but comfortable, and will be able to signal to Dr. Yeary if they feel anything and need their sedation level adjusted.

Dental Sedation for Routine Care and Cosmetic Dentistry

While sedation is most commonly indicated for comprehensive treatment, Dr. Yeary can use sedation during smaller cosmetic procedures, or even for standard care, such as:

• Application of dental veneers
• Teeth cleanings
• Filling cavities
• Placing dental crowns

We put our patients’ comfort first to alleviate their anxiety and ensure that they are comfortable during their appointment. Many times, we find that apprehensive patients feel anxious because they don’t know what to expect during their visit. We offer sedation to ease this feeling and allow patients to become familiar with our approach to patient care. Often, as patients become more comfortable with visiting our office, their need for sedation lessens and they are able to relax through their appointment without additional treatment aids. In getting to know each of our patients, we strive to understand their anxiety and offer care that allows them to visit our dental office, worry-free.
